أمريكا وكندا تخططان لاستئناف مفاوضات الرسوم الجمركية – أخبار السعودية – كورا نيو

قال السفير الأمريكي في أوتاوا بيت هوكسترا: «إن لدى الولايات المتحدة وكندا فرصة لاستئناف المحادثات التجارية بهدف تخفيف الرسوم الجمركية، رغم الأزمة الدبلوماسية التي اندلعت الشهر الماضي عندما أوقف الرئيس الأمريكي دونالد ترمب المفاوضات بشكل مفاجئ».

وأوضح هوكسترا خلال مؤتمر في أوتاوا أن البلدين كانا يحققان تقدماً في اتفاق محدود لمعالجة بعض النزاعات التجارية قبل أن تتوقف المحادثات في 23 أكتوبر، وذلك بعد اعتراض ترمب على حملة إعلانية تلفزيونية أطلقتها مقاطعة أونتاريو استخدمت مقطعاً للرئيس الأمريكي الأسبق رونالد ريغان لانتقاد الرسوم. وقد ردّ ترمب حينها بإعلان وقف المفاوضات عبر منصته «تروث سوشال».

وشدّد هوكسترا على أن عهد التجارة الخالية من الرسوم بين البلدين قد انتهى، مؤكداً أن واشنطن تتوقع وجود تعرفة جمركية «بشكل ما» على السلع الكندية، بينما يتعين على أوتاوا العمل للحصول على «أقل مستوى ممكن» من الرسوم في النظام الأمريكي الجديد.

The American ambassador in Ottawa, Pete Hoekstra, said: “The United States and Canada have an opportunity to resume trade talks aimed at easing tariffs, despite the diplomatic crisis that erupted last month when President Donald Trump abruptly halted negotiations.”

Hoekstra explained during a conference in Ottawa that the two countries were making progress on a limited agreement to address some trade disputes before talks were suspended on October 23, following Trump’s objection to a television advertising campaign launched by Ontario that used a clip of former President Ronald Reagan to criticize the tariffs. Trump responded at the time by announcing the halt of negotiations via his platform “Truth Social.”

Hoekstra emphasized that the era of tariff-free trade between the two countries has ended, confirming that Washington expects some form of tariff on Canadian goods, while Ottawa must work to achieve the “lowest possible” level of tariffs in the new American system.
