توفي الممثل البريطاني المخضرم ديريك مارتن، أحد أبرز نجوم الدراما التلفزيونية في بريطانيا، عن عمر ناهز 92 عامًا، بعد صراع قصير مع المرض داخل أحد المستشفيات، وفق ما أعلنت عائلته ووكيل أعماله اليوم (الأحد).
تشارلي سلاتر.. الدور الأيقوني
ويُعد مارتن من الوجوه المحبوبة لدى الجمهور، خاصة لدوره الأيقوني في مسلسل «إيست إندرز» (EastEnders)، حيث جسّد شخصية سائق التاكسي والأب الحنون تشارلي سلاتر على مدار 15 عامًا، ليصبح واحدًا من أكثر الشخصيات تأثيرًا في تاريخ المسلسل.
وقال نجلاه، ديفيد وجوناثان، في بيان مؤثر: «لم يكن ديريك مجرد أب بالنسبة لنا، بل كان صديقًا حقيقيًا، دعمنا في أوقات النجاح والانكسار، ولم يتوقف يومًا عن التعلم أو حب الناس، سنفتقده كثيرًا».
من الجزار إلى نجم الشاشة
وُلد ديريك مارتن في شرق لندن عام 1933، وبدأ حياته العملية جزارًا في سوق سميثفيلد للحوم، قبل أن يشق طريقه إلى عالم التمثيل دون دراسة أكاديمية أو خبرة مسرحية. كما أدى الخدمة الوطنية في سلاح الجو الملكي البريطاني، وعمل في وظائف متعددة شملت المصانع وأعمال الطرق وسباقات السيارات.
دخل مارتن عالم الفن بدايةً كـ«دوبلير» لمشاهد خطرة، وشارك في حلقات من مسلسل «Doctor Who»، قبل أن يتحول إلى التمثيل الكامل عقب إصابته بكسر في عظمة الترقوة أثناء تصوير مسلسل «Elizabeth R» عام 1971.
مسيرة فنية طويلة
وعلى مدار أكثر من خمسة عقود، شارك مارتن في أعمال تلفزيونية شهيرة، منها: Z-Cars، Softly Softly، The Sweeney، Minder، Bergerac، The Bill، Little Britain، وكان دوره كمفتش الشرطة فريد بايل في مسلسل Law and Order عام 1977 نقطة انطلاقة حقيقية لمسيرته.
تشارلي سلاتر.. الأب الحامي
ظل الدور الأبرز في حياته المهنية شخصية «تشارلي سلاتر»، رب عائلة سلاتر، الذي وصل حي «والفورد» عام 2000، ليجسد صورة الأب الحامي لعائلة نسائية في الغالب، وهو الدور الذي حفر اسمه في ذاكرة المشاهدين حتى مغادرته المسلسل عام 2016 بعد وفاة الشخصية بنوبة قلبية.
رسالة من إدارة إيست إندرز
وفي بيان رسمي، أعربت إدارة مسلسل «إيست إندرز» عن حزنها العميق، قائلة: «منذ ظهوره الأول، نجح ديريك مارتن في ترسيخ شخصية تشارلي سلاتر في قلوب الجمهور، ومثلما كان تشارلي يفعل أي شيء من أجل عائلته، كان ديريك كذلك مع من حوله».
حياة خارج التمثيل
بعيدًا عن التمثيل، كان مارتن شغوفًا بكرة القدم والجولف، وعضوًا بارزًا في منظمة Grand Order of Water Rats الخيرية، حيث شغل منصب «King Rat» بين عامي 2010 و2011، ونال احترام زملائه لما قدمه من أعمال خيرية وإنسانية.
تزوّج مرتين وانتهى زواجه بالانفصال، وترك خلفه ابنيه اللذين احتفل معهما بعيد ميلاده التسعين عام 2023، ليبقى إرثه الفني والإنساني حاضرًا في ذاكرة الجمهور البريطاني.
Veteran British actor Derek Martin, one of the most prominent stars of television drama in Britain, has passed away at the age of 92 after a short battle with illness in a hospital, his family and agent announced today (Sunday).
Charlie Slater.. The Iconic Role
Martin is considered one of the beloved faces of the audience, especially for his iconic role in the series “EastEnders,” where he portrayed the character of the taxi driver and caring father Charlie Slater for 15 years, becoming one of the most influential characters in the show’s history.
His sons, David and Jonathan, said in an emotional statement: “Derek was not just a father to us, but a true friend, supporting us in times of success and failure, and he never stopped learning or loving people. We will miss him dearly.”
From Butcher to Screen Star
Derek Martin was born in East London in 1933 and began his working life as a butcher in Smithfield meat market before making his way into the acting world without formal education or theatrical experience. He also served in the Royal Air Force and held various jobs including in factories, road work, and car racing.
Martin entered the world of art initially as a stunt double for dangerous scenes and appeared in episodes of “Doctor Who,” before transitioning to full acting after suffering a broken collarbone while filming the series “Elizabeth R” in 1971.
A Long Artistic Career
Over more than five decades, Martin participated in famous television works, including: Z-Cars, Softly Softly, The Sweeney, Minder, Bergerac, The Bill, Little Britain, and his role as police inspector Fred Byle in the series Law and Order in 1977 was a real turning point in his career.
Charlie Slater.. The Protective Father
The most prominent role in his career remained that of “Charlie Slater,” the head of the Slater family, who arrived in the “Walford” neighborhood in 2000, embodying the image of the protective father of a predominantly female family, a role that etched his name in the memories of viewers until he left the series in 2016 after the character’s death from a heart attack.
A Message from the EastEnders Management
In an official statement, the management of the “EastEnders” series expressed their deep sorrow, saying: “Since his first appearance, Derek Martin succeeded in establishing the character of Charlie Slater in the hearts of the audience, and just as Charlie would do anything for his family, so did Derek for those around him.”
Life Outside Acting
Away from acting, Martin was passionate about football and golf, and was a prominent member of the Grand Order of Water Rats charity organization, serving as “King Rat” between 2010 and 2011, earning the respect of his peers for his charitable and humanitarian work.
He was married twice, with both marriages ending in separation, and he left behind two sons with whom he celebrated his 90th birthday in 2023, ensuring that his artistic and humanitarian legacy remains present in the memories of the British public.
