أُلغيت أكثر من 4 آلاف رحلة جوية داخل الولايات المتحدة، اليوم (الأحد)مع اقتراب عاصفة شتوية وُصفت بالـ«هائلة»، تسببت بالفعل في انقطاع التيار الكهربائي عن أكثر من 210 آلاف مشترك في عدة ولايات، وصولاً إلى ولاية تكساس غرباً، وهددت بشلّ ولايات الشرق بتساقطات ثلجية كثيفة.
وحذّر خبراء الأرصاد من أن الثلوج والمطر المتجمد والصقيع، المصحوبة بدرجات حرارة شديدة الانخفاض، ستجتاح الثلثين الشرقيين من البلاد اعتباراً من الأحد وتمتد إلى مطلع الأسبوع.
عاصفة شتوية تاريخية
في الوقت الذي تضرب فيه عاصفة شتوية تاريخية أجزاءً واسعة من الولايات المتحدة، متسببةً بموجة تجمد قاسية من الجليد والثلوج، يواجه جنوب البلاد خطراً مختلفاً يتمثل في عواصف رعدية شديدة قد تترافق مع رياح عاتية واحتمالات لحدوث أعاصير محدودة.
وتشير التوقعات الجوية إلى أن خطاً من العواصف الرعدية القوية بدأ بالتشكل صباح الأحد فوق ولايتي لويزيانا وميسيسيبي، جنوب مناطق التجمد الجليدي، قبل أن يتحرك شرقاً ليصل إلى ألاباما ومنطقة فلوريدا بانهاندل (شمال غرب فلوريدا) قرابة منتصف النهار. وبحلول ساعات ما بعد الظهر، ينتقل خطر الطقس العنيف إلى جنوب غرب ولاية جورجيا.
17 ولاية تحت العاصفة
وبحسب خبراء الأرصاد، فإن دوران العاصفة الشتوية سيؤدي إلى تحوّل الرياح السطحية في أجزاء من لويزيانا وميسيسيبي وألاباما وفلوريدا بانهاندل وجنوب غرب جورجيا إلى رياح جنوبية، ما يسمح بسحب هواء دافئ ورطب مباشرة من خليج المكسيك، وهو ما يشكل بيئة مثالية لنشوء عواصف رعدية قوية.
وتخضع المناطق الجنوبية من ولايات ميسيسيبي وألاباما وجورجيا، إضافة إلى فلوريدا بانهاندل، لتصنيف خطر من المستوى الثاني من أصل خمسة، وفق مقياس شدة العواصف. وتشمل هذه المناطق مدناً رئيسية مثل موبايل ومونتغمري في ألاباما، وبنما سيتي في فلوريدا، وألباني في جورجيا.
عواصف رعدية شديدة
ومن المتوقع أن تعمل هذه الرطوبة كوقود لعواصف رعدية قوية إلى شديدة تتحرك على طول الجبهة الهوائية الباردة المصاحبة للنظام الجوي. كما ستتوافر ظروف مناسبة لما يُعرف بـ«قصّ الرياح» (Wind Shear)، أي اختلاف سرعة واتجاه الرياح مع الارتفاع، ما قد يسمح لبعض العواصف بالتصاعد والاشتداد.
وحذّرت التوقعات من احتمال تسجيل هبّات رياح تتجاوز سرعتها 60 ميلاً في الساعة (نحو 97 كيلومتراً في الساعة)، إضافة إلى خطر حدوث أعاصير محدودة ومعزولة، ومع ذلك، أشار خبراء الأرصاد إلى أن ضعف الاستقرار الجوي قد يحدّ من حجم وشدة التفشي العام لهذه العواصف.

ووصف الرئيس الأمريكي دونالد ترمب العواصف بأنها «تاريخية»، معلناً موافقته على إعلان حالة طوارئ اتحادية للكوارث في عدد من الولايات، من بينها ساوث كارولاينا، فرجينيا، تينيسي، جورجيا، نورث كارولاينا، ماريلاند، أركنساس، كنتاكي، لويزيانا، ميسيسيبي، إنديانا، ووست فرجينيا.
وكتب ترمب عبر منصة «تروث سوشيال»: «سنواصل المراقبة والتواصل مع جميع الولايات الواقعة في مسار هذه العاصفة. التزموا السلامة، وحافظوا على الدفء».
تأثيرات كارثية
وأفادت وزارة الأمن الداخلي الأميركية بأن 17 ولاية، إضافة إلى مقاطعة كولومبيا، أعلنت حالات طوارئ بسبب الطقس، وقالت وزيرة الأمن الداخلي، كريستي نويم، إن «عشرات الآلاف من السكان في ولايات جنوبية متضررة فقدوا الكهرباء»، مؤكدة أن فرق المرافق تعمل على استعادة التيار بأسرع وقت ممكن.
وواصلت أعداد انقطاعات الكهرباء ارتفاعها، حيث أظهرت بيانات موقع PowerOutage المتخصص في متابعة الكهرباء في الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية أنه بحلول الساعة الثانية صباحاً بتوقيت الساحل الشرقي، كان نحو 217 ألف مشترك بلا كهرباء، تركز معظمهم في ولايات لويزيانا وميسيسيبي وتكساس وتينيسي.
وفي خطوة احترازية، أصدرت وزارة الطاقة الأمريكية أمراً طارئاً يتيح لمجلس موثوقية كهرباء تكساس استخدام مصادر توليد احتياطية في مراكز البيانات والمنشآت الكبرى، في محاولة للحد من انقطاعات التيار على نطاق واسع.
كما حذّرت هيئة الأرصاد الجوية من عاصفة شتوية «واسعة النطاق وطويلة الأمد بشكل غير معتاد»، متوقعة تراكمات جليدية كثيفة في جنوب شرق البلاد، مع تأثيرات «مشلّة وقد تكون كارثية محلياً».
كما توقعت تسجيل درجات حرارة قياسية الانخفاض ورياحاً شديدة البرودة تمتد إلى منطقة السهول الكبرى بحلول يوم الإثنين.
إلغاء رحلات واستنفار
وبحسب بيانات موقع «فلايت أوير» لتتبع الرحلات، تم إلغاء أكثر من 4 آلاف رحلة جوية، إضافة إلى إلغاء أكثر من 9,400 رحلة أخرى مجدولة ليوم الأحد.
ودعت شركات الطيران الأمريكية الكبرى المسافرين إلى متابعة التحديثات تحسباً لتغييرات مفاجئة، وأعلنت شركة «دلتا إيرلاينز» أنها تواصل تعديل جداولها، مع إلغاءات إضافية في أتلانتا وعلى طول الساحل الشرقي، بما في ذلك بوسطن ونيويورك، مشيرة إلى نقل خبراء من مطارات المناطق الباردة لدعم عمليات إزالة الجليد والمناولة الأرضية في مطارات الجنوب.

Weather experts warned that snow, freezing rain, and frost, accompanied by extremely low temperatures, will sweep across the eastern two-thirds of the country starting Sunday and extending into the early week.
Historic Winter Storm
As a historic winter storm strikes large parts of the United States, causing a severe freeze of ice and snow, the southern part of the country faces a different danger in the form of severe thunderstorms that may be accompanied by strong winds and the potential for isolated tornadoes.
Weather forecasts indicate that a line of strong thunderstorms began to form on Sunday morning over Louisiana and Mississippi, south of the freezing areas, before moving eastward to reach Alabama and the Florida Panhandle (northwest Florida) around noon. By the afternoon hours, the threat of severe weather shifts to southwestern Georgia.
17 States Under the Storm
According to meteorologists, the rotation of the winter storm will cause surface winds in parts of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, the Florida Panhandle, and southwestern Georgia to shift to southerly winds, allowing warm, moist air to be drawn directly from the Gulf of Mexico, creating an ideal environment for the development of strong thunderstorms.
The southern regions of Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia, in addition to the Florida Panhandle, are under a level two risk classification out of five, according to the storm severity scale. These areas include major cities such as Mobile and Montgomery in Alabama, Panama City in Florida, and Albany in Georgia.
Severe Thunderstorms
This moisture is expected to act as fuel for strong to severe thunderstorms moving along the cold front associated with the weather system. Conditions will also be favorable for what is known as “wind shear,” meaning differences in wind speed and direction with height, which may allow some storms to intensify and strengthen.
Forecasts warned of the possibility of wind gusts exceeding 60 miles per hour (about 97 kilometers per hour), in addition to the risk of isolated and limited tornadoes; however, meteorologists noted that weak atmospheric stability may limit the overall size and intensity of these storms.
This weather threat comes as the historic winter storm continues to inundate vast areas of the country with heavy snow and dangerous ice, creating life-threatening travel conditions for hundreds of millions of residents, from Arizona in the west to Maine in the east.
Impact on 245 Million People
The storm has affected over 245 million people, leading to widespread power outages and the cancellation of thousands of flights. The storm also set a new record before the snowfall began, as it became the largest number of U.S. counties under winter storm warnings at the same time.
President Donald Trump described the storms as “historic,” announcing his approval of a federal disaster emergency declaration for several states, including South Carolina, Virginia, Tennessee, Georgia, North Carolina, Maryland, Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Indiana, and West Virginia.
Trump wrote on the Truth Social platform: “We will continue to monitor and communicate with all states in the path of this storm. Stay safe, and keep warm.”
Catastrophic Effects
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security reported that 17 states, in addition to the District of Columbia, have declared emergencies due to the weather. Homeland Security Secretary Kristjen Nielsen stated that “tens of thousands of residents in affected southern states have lost power,” confirming that utility crews are working to restore power as quickly as possible.
The number of power outages continued to rise, with data from the PowerOutage website, which tracks electricity in the United States, showing that by 2 AM Eastern Time, about 217,000 customers were without electricity, primarily concentrated in Louisiana, Mississippi, Texas, and Tennessee.
As a precautionary measure, the U.S. Department of Energy issued an emergency order allowing the Electric Reliability Council of Texas to use backup generation sources in data centers and large facilities in an effort to mitigate widespread outages.
The National Weather Service also warned of a “widespread and unusually long-lasting winter storm,” predicting heavy ice accumulations in the southeastern U.S., with “crippling and potentially catastrophic local impacts.”
It is also expected that record low temperatures and extremely cold winds will extend into the Great Plains by Monday.
Flight Cancellations and Alert
According to data from FlightAware, over 4,000 flights have been canceled, in addition to more than 9,400 other flights scheduled for Sunday.
Major U.S. airlines urged travelers to monitor updates in anticipation of sudden changes, and Delta Airlines announced that it continues to adjust its schedules, with additional cancellations in Atlanta and along the East Coast, including Boston and New York, noting that experts are being brought in from cold-weather airports to assist with de-icing and ground handling operations in southern airports.
For its part, JetBlue reported canceling about 1,000 flights through Monday, with the possibility of more cancellations, while United Airlines confirmed that it has proactively canceled some flights in the areas most affected by the weather conditions.
Power Grids Under Pressure
Meanwhile, electricity grid operators have intensified their measures to avoid resorting to rolling blackouts, and Dominion Energy, which operates in Virginia and includes the largest concentration of data centers in the world, indicated that the storm could be among the largest winter events affecting its operations if ice forecasts prove accurate.
At the conclusion of a press conference regarding federal government preparations, the Secretary of Homeland Security urged Americans to exercise caution, stating: “The weather will be extremely cold; we urge everyone to stock up on fuel and food, and we will get through this crisis together.”
