Atherton (located between Wigan and Bolton) hosts an annual parade that presents scenes of the Nativity with festive characters and decorated donkeys used to carry children during the display. Following the announcement by local council member Stuart Gerard to cancel the event due to a previous decision by Wigan Council prohibiting the involvement of animals, angry reactions erupted in the local community.
Residents sharply criticized the decision, considering it an affront to their values and traditions. Adrian White, the director of one community group, wrote on Facebook that the move was an “assault on freedoms,” urging parents to reject it. In response, council member Jess Eastoe attempted to ease the tension by suggesting holding the parade without donkeys.
However, the Atherton Residents Association overseeing the event later announced that the parade would take place “with donkeys and everything,” clarifying that the crisis resulted from a “misunderstanding” of the council’s rules. The association mentioned that some officials confused community events with official council events, leading to an inaccurate decision, before the person responsible apologized and the original plan was reinstated.
In a press comment, Wigan Council clarified that the rules prohibiting the use of live animals for entertainment purposes apply only to events organized by the council itself, while not including events managed by the local community, emphasizing the need for full care of the participating animals.
