كشفت السلطات في غامبيا مصرع 7 أشخاص وفقدان العشرات، إثر غرق قارب يحمل مهاجرين غير شرعيين، قبالة سواحل البلاد.

وقالت حكومة غامبيا في بيان الخميس إنها على علم بحادثة بحرية مأساوية تتعلق بمركب يعتقد أنه كان يقل أكثر من 200 مهاجر، وقد غرق قرب قرية جيناك بمنطقة الضفة الشمالية.

وأوضحت أنه تم إنقاذ 96 شخصاً على الأقل، العديد منهم كانوا مصابين بجروح خطيرة، مشيرة إلى أن البحرية الغامبية أطلقت إثر تلقيها نداء استغاثة عملية بحث وإنقاذ بمشاركة عدة سفن حربية.

وأضاف البيان أنه عثر على المركب المنكوب جانحاً على ضفة رملية، لافتاً إلى أنه تم التعرف على هوية عدد من الضحايا وتبين أنهم ليسوا من الجنسية الغامبية.

يذكر أن المهاجرين غير الشرعيين يسعون للوصول إلى جزر الكناري كبوابة إلى دول أوروبا، عبر رحلات محفوفة بالمخاطر في المحيط الأطلسي، إلا أن تشديد الرقابة البحرية في السنغال وموريتانيا والمغرب أدى إلى انطلاق قوارب صغيرة نحو جزر الكناري من نقاط أبعد، لاسيما من سواحل غامبيا وغينيا كوناكري، ما يطيل مدة الرحلة البحرية ويزيد المخاطر.

The authorities in Gambia have reported the death of 7 people and the disappearance of dozens, following the sinking of a boat carrying illegal migrants off the country’s coast.

The Gambian government stated in a statement on Thursday that it is aware of a tragic maritime incident involving a vessel believed to have been carrying more than 200 migrants, which sank near the village of Jinack in the northern bank area.

It clarified that at least 96 people have been rescued, many of whom were seriously injured, noting that the Gambian navy launched a search and rescue operation after receiving a distress call, with the participation of several warships.

The statement added that the sunken vessel was found stranded on a sandy shore, pointing out that the identities of some of the victims have been recognized and it was determined that they are not of Gambian nationality.

It is worth mentioning that illegal migrants seek to reach the Canary Islands as a gateway to European countries, through perilous journeys across the Atlantic Ocean. However, increased maritime surveillance in Senegal, Mauritania, and Morocco has led to small boats departing towards the Canary Islands from further points, especially from the coasts of Gambia and Guinea Conakry, which prolongs the maritime journey and increases the risks.
