شهدت مدينة سان رامون في ولاية كاليفورنيا، يوم الإثنين، نشاطاً زلزالياً مكثفاً، حيث سجّلت هيئة المسح الجيولوجي الأمريكية (USGS) ما لا يقل عن 22 هزة أرضية خلال ساعات، كان آخرها عند الساعة 5:06 مساءً بالتوقيت الشرقي.
سلسلة هزات أرضية
وبحسب الهيئة، بدأت السلسلة بهزة بلغت قوتها 3.8 درجة عند الساعة 9:27 صباحاً، تلتها هزة أقوى بقوة 4.2 درجة في تمام 10:01 صباحاً، شعر بها السكان في مناطق واسعة شملت سان فرانسيسكو وساكرامنتو وسان خوسيه.
ورغم الشعور الواضح بالاهتزازات في مختلف أنحاء منطقة الخليج، أكدت السلطات أنه لم تُسجَّل أي إصابات بشرية أو أضرار مادية حتى الآن.
وأفاد سكان أحياء غلين بارك ونوبا في سان فرانسيسكو بسماع دوي قوي واهتزاز النوافذ، فيما أشارت صحيفة سان فرانسيسكو كرونيكل، إلى تأثر بعض خدمات النقل العام نتيجة هذه الهزات.
مخاوف من الزلزال الكبير
وتقع سان رامون مباشرة فوق فالق كالفيراس، وهو أحد الفروع الرئيسية لمنظومة فالق سان أندرياس الزلزالية، الأمر الذي أعاد إلى الواجهة المخاوف من اقتراب وقوع ما يُعرف محلياً بـ«الزلزال الكبير».
ووفقاً لتقارير هيئة المسح الجيولوجي الأمريكية، هناك احتمال بنسبة 95% لحدوث زلزال قوي تتجاوز شدته 6.7 درجة في منطقة خليج سان فرانسيسكو بحلول عام 2043.
ويُصنَّف زلزال بهذه القوة على فالق كالفيراس كحدث زلزالي كبير قد يتسبب بأضرار جسيمة، لا سيما في مناطق إيست باي المكتظة بالسكان.
ويقارن الخبراء هذا السيناريو بزلزال لوما برييتا عام 1989، الذي بلغت قوته 6.9 درجة وألحق دماراً واسعاً بالمنطقة، ويُعد معياراً تاريخياً عند الحديث عن (الزلزال الكبير) المحتمل.
وتركزت الهزة الأولى على بعد 16 ميلاً من كونكورد، و18 ميلاً من أوكلاند، و29 ميلاً من سان خوسيه، وهي مدن يقطنها أكثر من 1.5 مليون نسمة، كما تقع مدينة سان فرانسيسكو، التي يزيد عدد سكانها عن 800 ألف نسمة، على مقربة مباشرة من موقع النشاط الزلزالي.
تخذير العلماء
وأوضح علماء الزلازل أن فالق كالفيراس ينفصل عن فالق سان أندرياس الرئيسي قرب مدينة هوليستر في وسط كاليفورنيا، ويمتد موازياً له عبر منطقة إيست باي.
وحذروا من أن أحد هذه الفوالق، أو فروعاً قريبة منها، قد يقترب من نقطة الانكسار، ما قد يؤدي إلى زلزال قوي في قلب الولاية.
The city of San Ramon in California experienced intense seismic activity on Monday, with the United States Geological Survey (USGS) recording at least 22 earthquakes over several hours, the last of which occurred at 5:06 PM Eastern Time.
Series of Earthquakes
According to the agency, the series began with a tremor measuring 3.8 magnitude at 9:27 AM, followed by a stronger quake of 4.2 magnitude at 10:01 AM, which was felt by residents in wide areas including San Francisco, Sacramento, and San Jose.
Despite the noticeable shaking felt throughout the Bay Area, authorities confirmed that no injuries or property damage had been reported so far.
Residents of the Glen Park and Nopa neighborhoods in San Francisco reported hearing loud booms and feeling windows shake, while the San Francisco Chronicle noted that some public transportation services were affected by these quakes.
Concerns About a Major Earthquake
San Ramon is located directly above the Calaveras Fault, which is one of the main branches of the San Andreas Fault system, bringing back concerns about the potential occurrence of what is locally known as “the Big One.”
According to reports from the USGS, there is a 95% chance of a strong earthquake exceeding 6.7 magnitude occurring in the San Francisco Bay Area by 2043.
An earthquake of this magnitude on the Calaveras Fault is classified as a major seismic event that could cause significant damage, especially in the densely populated East Bay areas.
Experts compare this scenario to the Loma Prieta earthquake of 1989, which had a magnitude of 6.9 and caused widespread devastation in the region, serving as a historical benchmark when discussing the potential “Big One.”
The first quake was centered 16 miles from Concord, 18 miles from Oakland, and 29 miles from San Jose, cities that are home to more than 1.5 million residents, while the city of San Francisco, with a population of over 800,000, is in close proximity to the seismic activity site.
Scientists’ Warnings
Seismologists explained that the Calaveras Fault branches off from the main San Andreas Fault near the city of Hollister in Central California and runs parallel to it through the East Bay area.
They warned that one of these faults, or nearby branches, could be approaching a breaking point, which could lead to a strong earthquake in the heart of the state.
